Summary

What we found: We discovered that awe-inspiring physical environments significantly enhance attributions of charisma to leaders, particularly those not already known for their charisma. This was demonstrated through a field experiment where a real business leader was rated more charismatic when speaking in an awe-inducing room than in an ordinary room. Three follow-up experiments showed that grandeur amplifies charisma attributions, though the effect diminished or disappeared when the leader was already known for their charisma.

Why it matters: These findings highlight the overlooked impact of physical spaces in shaping perceptions of leadership qualities. By strategically leveraging awe-inducing environments, organizations can influence how leaders are perceived, particularly in contexts where charismatic appeal is essential for engagement and influence.

What next: Organizations and leaders can use these insights to enhance their charisma by intentionally choosing awe-inspiring venues for important speeches, presentations, or events. Leaders should also consider how the design and choice of their workspaces contribute to shaping their perceived authority and appeal.
